Star Trek Analogy....
I'd rather be in the Enterprise (Beta SP)....
....However, a Space Shuttle (mini-dv) would look pretty good over just a space suit. (VHS)
If guests were "flying" with me...I wouldn't use Mini-DV...it would be Beta-SP or DV-CAM.
If it were a "Solo" trip, I'd be willing to use Mini-DV.

The "Enterprise" / Space shuttle analogy simply means that there are times where each vessel has more validity for it's use over the other.
...Namely, how many "passengers" on board are counting on you for a safe trip.

My apologies. Fair analogy.

How dare you disarm me by agreeing with me.
Do you think I can just turn the analogy stream off because you decide to agree with me!
Just for that, you get another analogy.
Cops.
If you have 10,000 cops, you can put all 10,000 in their own squad car and say that is the only way to run things.....
....or you can put two cops per squad car in 4,500 cars, put a 500 on bikes, put a 100 on horse back, put a 100 on foot patrol, put a 100 on bicycles....put a 100 on emergency call, and the final 100 hundred on websites like this to police people with too much time on their hands...such as me!

I notice no one has mentioned Super VHS, which is what I use. Good resolution, and the tape is as tough as nails; should last a long time compared to those dinky little Hi-8 tapes. I know it's not in the same ballpark as Betacam tape, but it works.
Oscar Wilde died around 1900, before Will Rogers' time; and I thought he was the guy who said he never met anyone he didn't like! Just my Tuesday pondering...

If you playback Super-VHS masters in a high quality deck (the JVC-22 series...and you bought the add on boards), you get phenomenally shockingly good results!
Also, you black and white Super-8 shooters, S-VHS has a terrific luminence channel and may in fact be equal or better than BetaCam SP or DV-CAM when it comes to transferring BW super-8 over to Video.
But again, only if you playback the signal in a high-end JVC deck.

I know this is a bit like going around one's back side to scratch their elbow, but what about usind a divice that converts video signal to DV (firewire) output for computer editing purposes? So whatever format is available can be easily put into a cost effective editing environment? Not a "pro" solution I'm sure, but perhaps a viable option, particularly for those of us relegated to using VHS/S-VHS...any thoughts?
